The Hidden Metrics Behind High-Converting Campaigns
"Our reach was amazing this month!" is a sentence that sounds impressive — and means almost nothing on its own. Reach, likes, and followers feel good to see, but they don't tell you whether your marketing is actually making money or growing your business. That's where Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) come in — the real numbers that tell you if your marketing is working, or just looking busy.
What Is a KPI?
A KPI is a specific, measurable value that shows how effectively your marketing is achieving a defined goal. Unlike vague terms like "doing well" or "getting attention," a KPI gives you an actual number to track, compare, and improve over time. The right KPIs depend on your specific goal — awareness, engagement, leads, or sales — so it's important to track the ones that actually matter for what you're trying to achieve.
Awareness KPIs — "Are People Seeing Us?"
Reach: The number of unique people who saw your content or ad. Example: A Sheopur clothing store's Diwali sale post reaches 15,000 people in one week.
Impressions: The total number of times your content was displayed, including repeat views by the same person. Example: That same post was shown 40,000 times — meaning many people saw it more than once.
Why it matters: These KPIs are useful early on, when you're building visibility — but reach alone doesn't mean sales. Don't stop here.
Engagement KPIs — "Do People Care?"
Engagement Rate: Likes, comments, shares, and saves compared to your total reach or followers. Example: A coaching institute's reel gets 500 likes and 60 comments out of 10,000 views — a strong engagement rate showing real interest, not just passive scrolling.
Click-Through Rate (CTR): The percentage of people who clicked your ad or link after seeing it. Example: An ad shown to 5,000 people gets 150 clicks — a 3% CTR, which is considered solid for most industries.
Why it matters: Engagement shows whether your content actually resonates, not just whether it was seen.
Lead Generation KPIs — "Are People Interested Enough to Act?"
Cost Per Lead (CPL): How much you spend, on average, to get one interested contact (form fill, WhatsApp message, or call). Example: If you spend ₹5,000 on ads and get 50 leads, your CPL is ₹100 per lead.
Conversion Rate: The percentage of visitors or leads who take the desired action, like filling a form or messaging you. Example: Out of 200 people who visit your landing page, 20 fill out an inquiry form — a 10% conversion rate.
Why it matters: These KPIs tell you whether your marketing is actually generating real business interest, not just online activity.
Sales & ROI KPIs — "Are We Actually Making Money?"
Cost Per Acquisition (CPA): How much it costs, on average, to convert one lead into a paying customer. Example: If 10 out of 50 leads become paying students, and you spent ₹5,000 total, your CPA is ₹500 per enrolled student.
Return on Ad Spend (ROAS): Revenue generated for every rupee spent on ads. Example: Spending ₹10,000 on ads that generate ₹40,000 in course enrollments gives a ROAS of 4 — meaning every ₹1 spent returned ₹4.
Why it matters: This is the number that ultimately matters most to any business owner — is marketing actually profitable, or just expensive?
Choosing the Right KPIs for Your Goal
Not every campaign needs every KPI. A brand-new business focused on visibility should track reach and engagement first. A business ready to grow sales should focus tightly on CPL, conversion rate, and ROAS. Tracking the wrong KPIs for your current stage often leads to false confidence — great engagement numbers that never translate into revenue.
